Gallery 2010 presents Boys with guns by Prudence Murphy.
Prudence Murphy’s practice is concerned with an examination of the details of our quotidian existence, with an emphasis on the domestic, the familiar and the private. Boys with guns documents children’s spontaneous weapon play, exploring something of the mystery of children’s imaginings. The main component of this series, shot in Rhyl, a small coastal town in North Wales, closely follows the adventures of three boys as they make their way through the town, improvising their own war games. Also featured in this body of work are images of children in an Australian setting, likewise participating in creative interpretations of battle.
Boys with guns has been exhibited widely in Australia including solo exhibitions at Monash Gallery of Art in Melbourne, Queensland Centre for Photography in Brisbane and at FotoFreo 2012 in Fremantle and recently curated in a group exhibition at Maroondah Art Gallery, Melbourne. The works have been shortlisted in the finals of various art awards including the 37th Alice Art Prize 2012, Josephine Urlick & Win Schubert Photography Award 2011 & 2012, and the William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize.
This exhibition at Gallery 2010 is the first showing of images from this series in Sydney. Murphy is currently working on a new project which will be exhibited at Gallery 2010 next year.
