Matt Liggins uses art as a platform for social commentary – his work is provocative and absorbing, each piece is brazenly forthright in its message and its opinion. For his upcoming exhibition Happy as a Box of Birds at Gallery 2010, Matt has assembled an engaging collection of painting, sculpture and illustration that comes together as a strange and immersive environment within the gallery space. At once familiar and foreign, these pieces reflect upon the displacement of culture, society’s ethical hypocrisy and the ‘disease’ of consumerism. We visited Matt at his Redfern studio as he prepares for the opening of the show.
Happy as a Box of Birds opens at Gallery 2010 Thursday 20 June 2013 from 6 – 8pm. The exhibition continues Friday 21 June 6 – 8pm, Saturday 22 June 10am – 4pm and Sunday 23 June 11am – 3pm.
